“The client gives us their power. We are entrusted with it and must give it back to them.”
~ Michael Shea, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Volume 1
How many times have you or someone you know gone to a doctor, acupuncturist, or massage therapist for example and expected them to heal you of your emotional stress, chronic pain or tension?
You maybe expected them to be Super Man or Wonder Woman.
My guess is that this happens more often than not.
So, what’s a client to do? That’s what the practitioner or professional went to school for all of those years, right?
Well, sort of.
In this blog post, I’ll explain what I believe Michael Shea means by the above quote and how you can start to understand that true healing is always an inside job.
I’m dealing with (fill in the blank)
When a client first comes to me for a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy session, I’ll often ask them what’s wrong. Tight neck and shoulders, feeling overwhelmed, dealing with lots of stress in their life right now, anxiety…the list goes on and on.
And how long has this been going on? It’s always there, forever, years and years are often the answers that I will get back.
They may of tried many outside-in approaches (chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, rolfing, medications) which are all great and can be very helpful. They rely on the expertise of the practitioner to do something to them (some sort of outside manipulation) in order to get a result.
Insert this needle here, move this limb, adjust and re-align these cervical vertebra, etc. This can sometimes imply that the practitioner posses some kind of special knowledge, technique or protocol that will “fix” the client.
Healing never comes from the outside
Let’s talk about the above quote at the beginning of this post. When a new client comes to me, they think that I am going to heal them, “fix” them or make them feel better in some way.
They are giving me their power and seeing me as better then them in some way.
While it’s true that I went to school for 2 years to study Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, I deeply trust that the client’s body holds the answers to the healing that they so desperately want.
It knows exactly what to do and in what order to allow them to return back to a state of well-being.
It’s my job as a practitioner to support them through that process, teach them to reconnect to that inherent Health within and allow the process to unfold in a manageable way.
They give me their power…and I give it back to them. Their body does all of the healing…not me.
See, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is considered an inside-out approach where everything comes from inside the client rather then applying an outside force to cause a correction to occur.
Healing is always an inside job
Yep. See, as I mentioned the body always carries an abundance of Health inside of it. When we feel great, this Health is freely flowing through the body responding to stress, injuries and tension in an efficient manner.
Stress does not take hold of us as long, we are able to heal from sickness quickly and we can release tension when we notice it coming up….instead of allowing it to build up.
But, sometimes these inner resources (your ability to manage stress, tension, pain, etc.) become overwhelmed. It’s like you can only stretch a rubber band so far before it’s going to break. Your body is the same way.
So knowing this, when I give a client a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy session the first 3 or so sessions are about re-established and re-building these inner resources.
How is this done? Through becoming aware of places and sensations that feel okay to be with that are inside of the body. An area that feels warm, open, heavy, light, or fluid is what we are going for here.
Usually, I will have the client verbalize these comfortable sensations that they are noticing as it gets them involved in their session and creates a strong body-mind connection.
As an inner attention is brought to these sensations, they will start to cause a shift and a decrease of stress, pain and tension from the body. Inner resources are also built back up and the nervous system becomes more stable.
This happens from the inside-out and not the outside-in. There is no technique or outside manipulation done, but rather drawing from the strength and inner wisdom of the client that allows healing to occur at a very deep level.
As this happens the craniosacral system (think fluid that baths your brain and central nervous system) and nervous system start to come back into a state of balance and clients start to feel much better!
Are you ready to reconnect to the wisdom in your body?
If you’re ready to reconnect with your inner wisdom I invite you to schedule a series of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy sessions today.
We can work together to explore your inner landscape and restore your health at a very deep level. You also may learn a thing or two about yourself that you never even knew!
So, what do you think?
